Online poker took a backseat for me in 2009. This is due primarily to my new job (with 70+ hour weeks during the season), my girlfriend taking up a lot of my time, as well as my graphic and web design company. I went from averaging 2-3 tournaments a day (if I divide total tournaments played by 365, even though there were many days I didn't play) to less than one tournament per day. When I did play online, I did find myself playing more cash games than last year. I also started attending live games with greater frequency.
From a poker playing perspective, 2009 was really unremarkable for me and quite honestly very disappointing. I suppose however, that it was not a complete waste. I did find myself writing a lot more, and enjoyed doing so and sharing my thoughts to those interested. I also feel like I improved my mental game immensely, hopefully setting me up for bigger things in the future.
I really felt convicted towards the end of the year about my horrific lack of volume, especially when I started to see people's 2009 graphs. Ridiculous. It only cemented what I already knew though: volume is everything in online poker.
With these convictions I do plan on playing more poker in 2010. Also, with the experience of 2009, I know that I had a tough time finding the time to play in the fall. I will be making an effort to put in as much time possible between now and then, with most volume put in the early summer.
Because of my limited time available to play, I did mostly ignore bankroll management. I feel like I played mostly for fun, with replenishable funds I didn't mind losing. Clearly though, this isn't the best decision when it comes to playing poker and with this conviction I will hopefully play smarter in 2010.
In terms of live play, I do wish to play a ton more live. Unfortunately liquid money is always tight for me and I don't seperate live poker bankroll seperate from all my other cash. I should probably begin do to that though.
That's all I've got. Simple goals for 2010 and I'm already off to a great start with two Top 2 finishes and a great ITM percentage. Hope things continue well, and wish everybody the best as well.
